Degree of an equation

The simplest definition will be the "degree of an equation is the highest exponent present on any variable in an equation."

When you look at an equation, first see if it is simplified or not. An equation that is not in its simple form cannot be judged properly for its degree. After simplifying the equation by removing all parenthesis, you will get the equation arranged in descending order of the exponents present in that equation. This will make the equation more clear to you, and you will be able to understand it better.

When an equation is arranged in the descending order of its exponents, it is simple to determine the degree. Just look at the variable in the equation. And then find out the highest exponent that is present in that equation. This will give you the degree of that equation.

For example, the following equation has a degree of 2:
3x^2 + 4x + 5 = 0
This equation has a degree of 4:
7x^4 + 5x + 5x^3 = 0
