Standard form (general form) of quadratic equation

Definition:

A quadratic equation written in the standard form is of the form ax2 + bx + c = 0, where a, b and c are numbers and a is not equal to zero.

Description:
In the standard form, a quadratic equation has zero on the RHS (Right Hand Side) and a quadratic expression on the LHS (Left Hand Side). The quadratic expression on the LHS is written in descending order of exponents. That is, the first term is the one containing x-squared, the second term is the one containing x, and the third term is the constant term or the number, which does not contain any variable.

Importance:
A quadratic equation can be solved by the method of splitting the middle term (that is, factoring trinomials), or by applying the Quadratic Formula only when it is written in the standard form.

Examples:

The following are quadratic equations written in the standard form:
  •     2x2 + 2x + 2 = 0
  •     x2 - 4x - 3 = 0
  •     √3x2 + √3x - 3 = 0
  •     x2 / 4 + x - 3 = 0
